Rushed Into Emergency Surgery. Major Infection From Double Mastectomy

Following her double mastectomy surgery where both of Delia's breasts were completely removed, the road to recovery came with some complications. A week post-surgery Delia noticed that her whole left side (the side containing the cancer) was beginning to become enflamed and very sensitive to the touch. The liquid coming out of her drains (which she demonstrates how to use) had an odd appearance as well. When she began vomiting consistently and developed a fever we knew something was very wrong. The doctors linked the symptoms to a major infection and insisted that we perform emergency surgery that very day. The risk of the infection becoming septic and potentially lethal required haste and immediate action. After the surgery to remove the infection, which turned out to be a staph infection, Delia was able to relax for a few weeks before returning for yet another surgery to reinsert the left expander. Three surgeries total in about a month's time. The surgery chapter of Delia's treatment has easily been the most difficult and trying part; physically, mentally and emotionally. Delia still continues to glowingly push forward. #breastcancerawareness #breastcancersurvivor
