※ This video was produced in 2005 and may differ from the current situation. ■ A 40-Year Mystery - The ‘Wangung-ri Five-Story Stone Pagoda’ and the ‘Gold Diamond Sutra’ Excavated from It In 1965, during the dismantling and repair process to restore the leaning body of the Wangung-ri Five-Story Stone Pagoda in Iksan, Jeonbuk, unexpected artifacts poured out. Among the approximately 10 national treasure-class relics, including a bronze standing Buddha statue and a green reliquary, the ‘Gold Diamond Sutra,’ crafted from pure gold, was a work unprecedented in the world. Even after 40 years have passed, these enormous artifacts remain shrouded in mystery, with not even an excavation report being released. Who, and with what aspirations, created such a precious masterpiece? ■ Why Are the Production Dates of the Pagoda and the Reliquary Different? The Wangung-ri Five-Story Stone Pagoda, where the Diamond Sutra was excavated, was built during the Unified Silla period. Therefore, the Diamond Sutra has naturally been regarded as an artifact from the same period. However, new analyses regarding the production date of the gold Diamond Sutra have recently begun to emerge. First, the patterns on the reliquary excavated along with the Diamond Sutra were analyzed to be identical to those found during the Sabi period of Baekje. Furthermore, the calligraphy of the Diamond Sutra is identical to the style of the Sixth Patriarchs' Sutras in China, indicating that it dates back to no later than the 7th century. In other words, the Diamond Sutra and the reliquary that protected it were produced during the ‘Baekje’ era. However, the bronze standing Buddha statue and the stone pagoda excavated alongside them are works from the Unified Silla period. Why is it that only the Diamond Sutra is a work from the Baekje period, and why was it enshrined in a Unified Silla pagoda? ■ The Decisive Clue to Solving the Mystery - The Wanggung-ri Wooden Pagoda Site and Ancient Japanese Documents! During the dismantling of the Wanggung-ri Stone Pagoda in 1965, a structure resembling a ‘Baekje wooden pagoda,’ which was not visible in the stone pagoda, was discovered in the base, baffling the excavation team. However, the mystery remained unresolved and buried... In the mid-1990s, it was newly revealed that a much larger wooden pagoda site actually existed at the base of the current stone pagoda. In other words, the Diamond Sutra was originally enshrined within a wooden pagoda built prior to the current stone pagoda, and was moved there after the stone pagoda was constructed. A clue regarding this was discovered in the ancient Japanese document Gwanseum Eungheomgi*. The document contained records concerning King Mu of Baekje’s relocation of the capital to Wanggung-ri and the construction of temples in the Wanggung-ri area. We verified the relationship between the *Gwanseum Eungheomgi records, which match exactly, and the artifacts found at Wanggung-ri. ■ Wanggung-ri: The First Confirmed Site of a Baekje Royal Palace! Wanggung-ri, a place whose very name was extraordinary, was the very location where King Mu of Baekje relocated the capital. The fact that a Baekje palace existed here has been confirmed through excavations since the 1990s. Crucially, the artifact that reveals the nature of the Wanggung-ri site is a roof tile inscribed with the characters "Subu." It is a Baekje tile signifying a place where a chief resides. Based on the excavation results to date, the Baekje Royal Palace has been reconstructed graphically. The details are remarkably specific, ranging from ornate walls decorated with roof tiles, the appearance of the first-ever confirmed Three Kingdoms period garden, and workshop facilities to royal palace annex buildings including restrooms.
