Virgulino Ferreira da Silva, Lampião the King of Cangaço, Maria Bonita, and their gang camped at the Angicos farm on July 27, 1938. Virgulino considered the area extremely safe, far from the sight of police forces. But the following morning, the cangaceiros were ambushed by soldiers from the neighboring state of Alagoas, under the command of Lieutenant João Bezerra. Police officers under Lieutenant João Bezerra surrounded the 34 cangaceiros and opened fire with portable machine guns, killing 11 people instantly, including Virgulino Ferreira da Silva, "Lampião," and Maria Bonita. The combat lasted less than half an hour. Euphoric with their victory, the police mutilated the dead by cutting off their heads and seized all the money, gold, and jewels.
