August 25, 2018 - (13 TV / Vatican News / Camino Católico) Presiding over the Feast of Families in Dublin, Ireland, Pope Francis affirmed that families “are the hope of the Church and the world.” At the event, held in conjunction with the World Meeting of Families, the Holy Father emphasized that “God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, created humanity in his image to share in his love, to be a family of families, and to enjoy the peace that only he can give.” Before more than 70,000 people gathered at Croke Park Stadium, the Pope emphasized that “it is beautiful to celebrate, because it makes us more human and more Christian. It also helps us share the joy of knowing that Jesus loves us, accompanies us on life’s journey, and draws us closer to him each day.” “Today in Dublin, we gather for a family celebration of thanksgiving to God for what we are: one family in Christ, spread throughout the earth. The Church is the family of God’s children.” “A family in which we rejoice with those who are joyful and weep with those who suffer or are burdened by life,” he noted. The Pope affirmed that “the Gospel of the family is truly a joy for the world,” because in the family “Jesus can always be found. He lives there, in simplicity and poverty, as he did in the home of the Holy Family of Nazareth.” “God wants every family to be a beacon that radiates the joy of his love in the world,” he declared. “What does this mean? It means that, having encountered God’s saving love, we should try, with or without words, to manifest it through small acts of kindness in our daily routines and in the simplest moments of the day.” “This is holiness.” Francis also emphasized that “there is no perfect family. Without the habit of forgiving, the family becomes sick and gradually falls apart.” “To forgive means to give something of oneself. Jesus always forgives us. With the strength of his forgiveness, we too can forgive others, if we truly want to.” The Holy Father affirmed that those participating in the World Meeting of Families “form a spiritual ‘network’ of friendship, and social media can help them maintain this bond and extend it to other families in many parts of the world.” “It is important, however, that these media do not become a threat to the true network of flesh-and-blood relationships, imprisoning us in a virtual reality and isolating us from the authentic relationships that encourage us to give the best of ourselves in communion with others,” he noted. Francis warned that “when social media takes over” and “everyone is on their phone and connected to the outside world,” a danger arises, because “it takes you away from the concrete reality of family and leads you to a gaseous, abstract life, lacking substance. Be attentive to this.” The Pope also expressed that “in every society, families generate peace because they teach love, acceptance, and forgiveness, which are the best antidotes against the hatred, prejudice, and revenge that poison the lives of individuals and communities.” “The love of Christ, which renews everything, is what makes marriage possible and a conjugal love characterized by fidelity, indissolubility, unity, and openness to life.” At the end of his message, Pope Francis affirmed that families, through their witness to the Gospel, “can help God realize his dream; you can contribute to bringing all of God’s children closer together, so that they may grow in unity and learn what it means for the whole world to live in peace as one big family.” The video shows and includes the Holy Father’s address translated into Spanish.
