Folk Song Suite - Vaughan Williams The Eastman Wind Ensemble conducted by Frederick Fennell.
Folk Song Suite by Ralph Vaughan Williams. Performed by The Eastman Wind Ensemble conducted by Frederick Fennell. From the album "Holst Vaughan Williams Grainger" Catalogue No. MRI 75011 (Vinyl release SRI 75011) The Folk Song Suite comprises three parts: 1. March -- Seventeen Come Sunday (Starts at 00:00) 2. Intermezzo -- My Bonny Boy (Starts at 03:10) 3. March -- Folk Songs from Somerset. (Starts at 06:49) There is nothing on the tape or inlay card to indicate the year of release of this album and the discography websites I have checked only indicate 1970s. One site states that this album is a re-issue of recording catalogue No. SR90388 which was first released in 1956 and recorded at the Eastman Theatre in Rochester, New York on 23rd April, 1955. The recording was originally made in mono, using a single microphone. An electronic stereo effect was added for the 1970s release (note the words "Electronic Stereo" on the cassette). This tape was originally unplayable due to a breakdown in the oxide coating, which leads to the secretion of fatty acids which form a waxy coating. This is not the same as sticky shed syndrome which is common in old reel to reel tapes. This condition makes the tape extremely slippery to the extent that the capstan and pinch roller cannot grip it. Either the tape will not play at all or at low and variable speed (wowing) Like sticky shed syndrome, this problem can be temporarily cured by baking the tape for a number of hours. Note that this process is very temperature critical and cannot be carried out in a normal domestic oven. The playback deck is a Revox B170 MkII.
