Al-Sawah begins with the premise that religion—whether revealed or a human construct—is necessarily a cultural phenomenon, and that the Prophet Muhammad could only express revelation through the culture from which he absorbed it. From this premise, he constructs a series of argumentative readings: from Muhammad's actual cultural environment (Mecca or the Levant?), to his supposed relationship with Christianity, to tracing the roots of specific Quranic stories in older Jewish, Christian, Zoroastrian, Manichean, and Canaanite traditions, culminating in a reinterpretation of the concept of prophetic "illiteracy." The thread that connects all of this is al-Sawah's defense of a historical-cultural approach to understanding the origins of Islam, which he argues does not contradict the "sanctity of the faith experience" but rather provides it—in his words—with "intellectual support."
