François Gemenne begins by observing that warnings about the severity of climate change are often ineffective because they rely on fear. Illustrating this with an anecdote about a couple who voted strategically in elections to reconcile their environmental concerns with their immediate economic interests, he then emphasizes the temporal and spatial lag of climate impacts, and the fact that those who suffer the consequences are not always those who cause them. François then argues for communication focused on the immediate personal benefits of climate action, using concrete examples to show that choices beneficial to the climate can also serve individual and economic interests. François Gemenne is a specialist in the geopolitics of the environment and migration. Director of the Hugo Observatory at the University of Liège, he also teaches at Sciences Po Paris and the University of Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines. He is one of the lead authors of the latest IPCC report, contributing to the understanding of the impacts of climate change. Known for his work on climate migration, highlighting environmental challenges and their social and political implications, he regularly appears in the media to raise public awareness of these crucial issues.
