Preston Deepdale Branch : Legacy Beneath the Surface

The Deepdale branch was originally built as part of the Preston and Longridge Railway, serving a vital role in transporting stone from the Longridge quarries into Preston. A key feature of the branch was its passage through the 862-yard Miley Tunnel, a hidden but impressive piece of Victorian engineering that ran beneath the city of Preston. In its early years, the line also offered passenger services, with Deepdale Bridge station (later known simply as Deepdale) opening in 1856. These services supported local communities and industry, though they ceased in 1930 due to falling demand. Goods traffic continued for several more decades, serving local businesses, coal yards, and institutions like Whittingham Hospital. Though the grand vision of linking Leeds to Fleetwood via this route never materialized, the line’s legacy lives on. The Miley Tunnel and much of the trackbed remain physically intact, though overgrown and unused. In recent years, renewed interest in sustainable urban transport has sparked proposals to transform parts of the old line into a modern tramway. This potential reuse, led by initiatives such as Preston Trampower, aims to repurpose the surviving infrastructure to support a greener, more connected future for the city.
