Hello and welcome to the beautiful seaside town of North Berwick. North Berwick - The Best Small Town in Scotland North Berwick is a former royal burgh not very far from Edinburgh with direct buses and its ideal place to visit any time of the year, the area has been occupied iron age dating from 2000 years ago. In the 12 century, Duncan earl of Fife founded his influential nunnery here. This city is surrounded by two beautiful castles - Dirleton and Tantallon castle run by a historic environment of Scotland. there has been a harbour of sorts in North Berwick from at least the 1100s and for the following 500 years, this was the location of a ferry crossing to Earlsferry, near Elie, in Fife. A steady stream of pilgrims to St Andrew's took advantage of a crossing that dramatically shortened their journey. Today, North Berwick's harbour is home to the East Lothian Yacht Club, based in one of the converted warehouses that do so much to add character to the harbour area. The superb Scottish Seabird Centre is located in a beautifully designed building just around the corner to the east. This offers a range of activities focused mainly on the bird life Several of the Islands in the Firth of Forth are near the town and visible best from the end of the old pier. They are Fidra, The Lamb, Craigleith, and Bass Rock; the latter hosts a thriving colony of birds, including puffins, gannets, and other seabirds. Dominating from the south is North Berwick Law, a conical hill which rises from the surrounding relatively flat landscape. North Berwick Law overlooks the beautiful town and stands at 187 m above sea level. North Berwick Law is relatively easy to climb and on the summit, you’ll find some ruins and ancient lookouts from the Napoleonic Wars.
