Pampã River, village of Águas Belas, mouth of the Águas Belas Stream. Demonym: aguasformosense. São José do Pampan District created with the name São José do Pampan, by provincial law nº 556, of 08-30-1911, subordinate to the municipality of Teofilo Otoni. Because the original settlement was founded opposite the mouth of the Águas Belas Stream, a left tributary of the Pampã River, the village took its name, later changed to Águas Formosas. History The Machacalis Indians were the original inhabitants of the Nanuque Pastoral region where the municipality of Águas Formosas is located today. From 1891 onwards, the exploration of the Pampã Valley by white men began. Between 1890 and 1899, the first inhabitants arrived in the region, fleeing the drought in the northeast of the country and in search of the medicinal plant Poaia, which abounded in the forests of the unknown Pampã Valley. Attracted by the abundant greenery and the fertility of its lands, they settled on the banks of the Pampã River, beginning the formation of the village of Águas Belas.
