Only two versions of this piece exist, recorded live at the Olympia in Paris, one in 1964 and the other in 1966. Jacques Brel never imagined this song would be so successful; he used it at the beginning of his shows to finish his soundcheck. Seeing that "Le Port d'Amsterdam" was a hit with the audience, he and his team decided to place it third in his future concerts and add it to the live album. For the melody, Jacques Brel admitted to being inspired by the tune of "Greensleeves," a traditional English song.
