Hidden Hunters: Panthera Small Cats Program| Studying and Protecting Elusive Small Cat Species

The 33 species of small wild cats are incredibly diverse, and all contribute to balanced ecosystems and biodiversity. Threatened by a multitude of threats including habitat loss, poaching, human-wildlife conflicts, illegal wildlife trade, disease and hybridization, many small cats face extinction. Panthera focuses on tailored conservation strategies for the world’s most threatened small cats by uncovering their unique ecological needs and addressing the most pressing threats. By the end of 2028, we aim to prevent 18 species of Threatened and Near-Threatened small cats from slipping closer to Extinction. Together, we can continue expanding our focus on wild cat conservation to shine a much-needed spotlight on increasingly threatened small cat species and implement science-based conservation action to ensure their future.
