La Cura de la Melancolía y el Exceso de Tristeza por la Fe Por Richard Baxter

The Cure for Melancholy and Excessive Sadness, by Faith by Richard Baxter Part II:    • La Confusion Religiosa Por Richard Baxter   "Lest he be consumed by excessive sadness."—2 Corinthians 2:7 Question: What are the best safeguards against melancholy and excessive sadness? The brevity of a sermon does not allow me time for unnecessary work, so I will not dwell on explaining the context. All I intend now is to open this last clause of the verse, which gives the reason why the reproved sinner, being penitent, should be forgiven and comforted; namely: lest he be consumed by excessive sadness; which includes these three doctrines, which I will address together, namely: 1. That sadness, even for sin, can be excessive. 2. That excessive sadness consumes the person. 3. Therefore, it must be resisted and relieved with necessary comfort, both by others and by ourselves. In addressing these points, I will observe this order: 1. I will show you when sorrow is excessive. 2. How excessive sorrow consumes a person. 3. What its causes are. 4. What the cure is. I. It is all too obvious that excessive sorrow for sin is not the ordinary case in the world. A stupid and dull disposition is the common cause of men's perdition. The plague of a hardened heart and a seared conscience prevents most from feeling the proper sense of sin, danger, or misery, and of all the great and eternal concerns of their guilty souls. A deathly sleep in sin deprives most of the use of sense and understanding; they perform some of the outward acts of religion as in a dream; they are consecrated to God in baptism by others, and profess to remain steadfast in it; They go to church and repeat the words of the creed, the Lord's Prayer, and the commandments; they partake of the Lord's Supper, all as if in a dream. They pretend to believe that sin is most hateful to God and most harmful to man, and yet they live in it with delight and obstinacy; they dream that they repent of it, when no persuasion will lead them to forsake it, and while they hate those who seek to cure them, they are unwilling to be as wicked and foolish as those who feel in them an effective sorrow for the past, or an effective sense of their present wickedness, or an effective resolve for a new and holy life. They dream that there is a judgment, a heaven, and a hell, but would they not be more affected by things of such ineffable consequence if they were awake? Would they be so absorbed in the affairs of the flesh and the world, and scarcely have a serious thought or word about eternity, if they were awake? Oh, how asleep and senseless they think, speak, and discuss the great work of man's redemption by Christ, and the necessity of justifying and sanctifying grace, and the joys and miseries of the life to come; and yet they say they believe in them! When we preach to them or speak to them of the greatest things, with the greatest evidence, clarity, and urgency we can, we speak as to the dead, or to sleeping men; they have ears, and they do not hear, nothing reaches their hearts. One would think that a man who reads the Scriptures and believes in the eternal glory offered, and the terrible punishment threatened, and the necessity of holiness for salvation, and of a Savior to deliver us from sin and hell, and how sure and near a step is to the unseen world for us all, should have a great deal of work to do in tempering and bearing the weight of such overwhelming things. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you wish to support the channel: http://paypal.me/FabioMontenegro927 Support this channel by liking and commenting with your opinion.
