Queen Padmavati is married to a Rajput ruler and lives a happy married life. Attracted by Padmavati's beauty, the tyrannical Sultan, Alauddin Khilji, invades their kingdom. Padmavat is a famous epic poem of the Sufi tradition within Hindi literature. Its author is Malik Muhammad Jayasi. Written in couplets and quatrains, the epic is written in Awadhi. A manuscript of Padmavat dated 1540 AD. It is in the Awadhi dialect of Hindi and is composed in couplets. A couplet follows every seven halves of a couplet, making the total number of couplets 653. It was composed in 947 Hijri (Samvat 1540). Some copies give the date of composition as 927 Hijri, but this is unlikely. Among other reasons, the biggest reason for this impossibility is that Malik Sahib was born in 900 or 906 AH. The text begins with a praise of Sher Shah as Shahavekt, which also proves the date of composition to be 947 AH.
