DIY Lifting Tripod for chain winch, pulleys, tackle block lifts etc
This how I built a lifting tripod for winching up loads on my smallholding. It can be used to lift all kinds and is easily portable. The length of the legs is 4.4m and this was chosen as it's a length I can carry easily in a van, on a trailer etc. Dimensions are given on the diagram in the video and also written (below). Heavy equipment such as this can be dangerous, do read the following carefully: Please note the sizes and thicknesses of metal, bolts & materials I chose are to suit my own needs and its capabilities are an estimate for my own use only - I make no guarantee as to the safety of this equipment and advise caution when using it. If you make such a tripod or use any information in this video it's entirely at your own risk. If you want to lift safely then you could for example make identical ones and test one or two to destruction, then you know exactly how much it can lift. If you are unsure then seek professional advice. Some YouTube viewers need professional advice in any case. It is always advisable not to walk under such equipment or under any elevated load and to ensure that others are advised of any potentially dangerous operation and keep children and pets away. Always remember, many people are born stupid, it's not their fault, and you're not even allowed to say anything these days. It is a good idea to have a method of attaching chain or rope etc between the legs to prevent the legs from splaying out and a loss of control of any lifting operation, especially if they are not firmly anchored or fixed. The legs and feet are brightly marked with paint as it is very easy to miss them when concentrating on other things, or for them to be 'lost' in the grass or background and people drive over them or into them. Remember that people may reverse to pick up loads and there are often blind spots for drivers. If you do build one to around the specs shown then please do give feedback as to what you have lifted and what it's capable of. Any constructive ideas for improvement or variations are welcome. DIMENSIONS: As not all dimensions on the drawings are very clear without a big screen, here they are, in mm: Headpiece Triangle: short sides 60, long sides 135, top to bottom 173, side to side (tips) about 198mm. M10 bolts 100mm long (inc head) with washers and locknuts. Plate thickness 10mm. The cheek pieces are welded on both sides of their bases (inside and out) and are placed 5mm back from the outside edge of the six-sided head shape: Ensure that they are reasonable similarly spaced before welding so that loads are distributed evenly and the works looks nice when the job is finished. Outer (sleeve) tubes: 60mm ext, 52 int. length 240. The bolt holes are drilled to 14mm diameter, with centres 27mm from top ends Scaffold legs: diameter 48 ext, 38 int. Length 4400. Feet: 6mm thick steel, 155x105, holes for pegs/screws 12mm, welded nuts for lock bolts M12, drilled 14mm holes, centres are 120mm from the top of the flat base part. Loop for winch hook is a 16mm diameter steel bolt with two M16 nuts for the locknut system, its total length is about 33cm. Hole drilled in headplate is 18mm diameter - it should be able to swivel freely so you can turn heavy loads. Welded closed loop hangs about 22cm below top plate when hanging on its two locknuts. Keep a bit of thread sticking out for safety. Weight of head assembly is about 8kg. Weight of the three feet totals about 7kg. The weight of each of the scaffold legs is about 14-16kg each from memory. Cheek pieces x 6 no: 80x60x6mm. Holes for the 10mm bolts are drilled to 11 mm and are 30mm from the top and in the centre. Use any bright paint or reflective tape you have lying around to mark the poles, head and feet for safety. Preferably alternate bright colours to make it really visible if you can.
