APINTI, A COMMUNICATION SYSTEM OF THE MAROONS OF SURINAME AND FRENCH GUIANA By André R.M. Pakosie In this video documentary I would like to give a brief explanation of the Apinti, a communication system used by the Maroons of Suriname and French Guiana. The Apinti is not only used as a musical instrument during celebrations, but also as a form of communication. The knowledge of this communication system was brought by our ancestors from Africa, especially from the area that is now Ghana. It is an Akan (Asante) cultural relic that we, the Maroons from the interior of Suriname and French Guiana, have kept alive over the many centuries since our ancestors were uprooted from Africa. Like the Akan (Asante) in Ghana, we use the Apinti to spread messages, to communicate with each other, our ancestors and the gods. There are many similarities between the Apinti tradition of the Akan (Asante) and that of the Maroons of Suriname and French Guiana. For example, the Apinti player is known to the Akan as 'Ეkyerema'. We, the Maroons of Suriname and French Guiana, call him 'Akeemá'. This is the name for the 'master drummer/drum spokesman', in our case the Apintiman. One difference is that in Suriname and French Guiana the apinti is played with both hands, while in Ghana it is played with two sticks. The foundation of the Apinti is ‘the Saä’. This is the introductory part of playing the Apinti, in which a series of set sounds should be played, to pay homage to God and all beings. The Apinti language used by us, the Maroons of Suriname and French Guiana, is called Wanwí. So a competent Apintiman (Apinti drummer and/or Apinti translator) must be able to speak and understand Wanwí. Otherwise he is not a competent Apintiman, but a person who has only learnt to play some Apinti sounds without knowing the Wanwí language. Such a person does not know the literal words of the sounds that come from the Wanwí language, nor their literal meanings. People who claim that beating any sound on a traditional (Maroon) drum is playing Apinti have no idea what Apinti is. Apinti has a wide range of sounds in the Wanwí language that you need to learn to play the drum properly. Each sound has its own meaning. Anyone can learn to play Apinti. Pakosie In deze videodocumentaire wil ik een korte uitleg geven over de Apinti, een communicatiesysteem dat gebruikt wordt door de Marrons van Suriname en Frans Guyana. De Apinti wordt niet alleen gebruikt als muziekinstrument tijdens festiviteiten, maar ook als communicatiemiddel. De kennis van dit communicatiesysteem werd door onze voorouders meegebracht uit Afrika, vooral uit het gebied dat nu Ghana is. Het is een cultureel overblijfsel van de Akan (Asante) dat wij, de Marrons uit het binnenland van Suriname en Frans Guyana, levend hebben gehouden in de vele eeuwen sinds onze voorouders uit Afrika werden weggerukt. Net als de Akan (Asante) in Ghana gebruiken wij de Apinti om boodschappen te verspreiden, om met elkaar, onze voorouders en de goden te communiceren. Er zijn veel overeenkomsten tussen de Apinti-traditie van de Akan (Asante) en die van de Marrons van Suriname en Frans Guyana. Zo staat de Apinti-speler bij de Akan bekend als 'Ეkyerema'. Wij, de Marrons van Suriname en Frans Guyana, noemen hem 'Akeemá'. Dit is de naam voor de 'meesterdrummer/drumwoordvoerder', in ons geval de Apintiman. Een verschil is dat in Suriname en Frans Guyana de Apinti met beide handen wordt bespeeld, terwijl dat in Ghana met twee stokken gebeurt. De basis van de Apinti is de ‘Saä’. Dit is het inleidende deel van het spelen van de Apinti, waarin een reeks vaste klanken moet worden gespeeld om eer te bewijzen aan God en alle wezens. De Apinti-taal die door ons, de Marrons van Suriname en Frans Guyana, wordt gebruikt heet Wanwí. Een competente Apintiman (Apinti-drummer en/of Apinti-vertaler) moet dus Wanwí kunnen spreken en begrijpen. Anders is hij geen competente Apintiman, maar een persoon die alleen maar een paar Apinti-klanken heeft leren spelen zonder de Wanwí-taal te kennen. Zo iemand kent niet de letterlijke woorden van de klanken die uit het Wanwí komen, noch hun letterlijke betekenissen. Mensen die beweren dat het slaan van welk geluid dan ook op een traditionele (Marron) drum Apinti is, hebben geen idee wat Apinti is. Apinti heeft een breed scala aan klanken in de Wanwí-taal die je moet leren om de drum goed te kunnen bespelen. Elke klank heeft zijn eigen betekenis. Iedereen kan Apinti leren spelen.
