[Les disparus d'Algérie]
March 14, 2005 Report on the premature opening of archives concerning the abduction and murder of French citizens by the FLN in 1962. Interview with a woman who receives a letter concerning her father, and interviews with Bernard Coll, of the "Jeune Pied-Noir" association, and Marc Dubourdieu, of the Interministerial Mission for Repatriates, who explains why the French Foreign Ministry agreed to open the file earlier than planned. Commentary over archival footage and photographs. [Source: France 3 documentation] After 43 years of waiting, we are finally beginning to learn more about the fate of the French who disappeared in Algeria in 1962. Following the ceasefire of March 19, several thousand "pieds-noirs" who had chosen to remain were abducted or murdered by the FLN, and the French army was ordered not to intervene. Bernard Coll and his wife are working on the case of the missing: 3,000 people abducted whose families have never heard from them. Yet, as early as 1963, the Red Cross conducted an investigation, and since then the files have remained in drawers at the Quai d'Orsay (the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs). Pressed by associations, the government has agreed to open the archives sooner than planned. It believes that people are finally ready to discuss this period. For the families of the missing, this opening is a first step. They now expect the French state to acknowledge its responsibility in this tragedy, which has been silenced for 40 years.
