Today is January 21st, and after the Epiphany frosts, a thaw has arrived! It was +3 degrees Celsius, but it felt like +15 after the bitter cold we haven't had for the last couple of years. This day felt like spring for the first time this year. 🌿 But not everything is rosy. Unfortunately, things aren't looking good with the lamb yet. We noticed the tip of the leg was swollen—we had to remove the cast, wait for the swelling to go down, and then apply a bandage on sticks. We're waiting for the bone to heal. By the way, the lamb (he's about 20 days old) lost his tail today—the docking was successful. Now, let's have an honest conversation. I told the bitter truth about why we didn't take the lamb for an x-ray. I know they'll blackmail me with formal replies, but better the bitter truth than a sweet lie. That's the life of farm animals. Why didn't we go to the vet? "He's not a purebred—an Edelbay/Prekos cross." "He's the smallest lamb from lambing and first lambing." "They don't keep lambs like that for breeding. They keep one ram for 200 ewes, and no farm would buy him even if the leg were intact—he's too small." Veterinary surgery: one day for an x-ray. The vet will cut the leg, set the bones, and apply a cast. In three months, the lamb will be sold for less than the cost of treatment. Many farms wouldn't even notice him. But the lamb is doing great now! There's no excruciating pain, he's eating well, running, and even jumping. We haven't left things to chance—we're treating, bandaging, and caring for him. The internet is full of cases where a leg healed without an x-ray. Important: please don't get used to the little lambs. They're all related to Gogi the ram, and they'll most likely be sold. It's better to part with them than with Gogi. Please be reasonable. We're doing everything we can. 🙏 Our son Vanya is with us at the farm. His mother, of course, spoils him with baked treats.
