Mitsubishi Pajero Engine Failure Part 1 - Generation 4 Pajero / Montero / Shogun
Engine issue with 3.2 4M41 common rail diesel in 2008 NS Mitsubishi Generation 4 Pajero / Montero / Shogun Taking off from the lights on the way home from work and lost engine power. There was no big bang, but it was smoking like a chimney and felt like it was running on 3 cylinders. Dipstick was pushed out of the sump and oil everywhere under the bonnet. I suspected a cracked piston from the outset and this video covers the troubleshooting process I went through to determine the problem and cause: • Compression test (remove upper inlet manifold and glow plugs) • Injector inspection (remove rocker cover and injector) • Inlet ports inspection (remove lower inlet manifold) • Bottom end inspection (sump removal) • Exhaust ports inspection (remove EGR cooler, turbo, exhaust manifold) • Cylinder inspection (remove timing chain sprockets, camshafts, cylinder head) In the end, I decided to replace the failed engine with a low mileage NX (pre-DPF) engine, which I’ll cover in part 2 Disclaimer: Working on cars can be hazardous.
