But when I opened the rice jar, I realized there was only a little rice left at the bottom. The door could wait, but Kim Truc’s next meal could not. So I went to work in a cornfield in the village, hoping to earn enough money to buy a small bag of rice and a few nails. After a long day, I returned home with my clothes covered in dust. I planned to rest and leave the door repair until the next day. But when I saw Kim Truc using an old sack to cover the gap under the door and block the cold wind, I knew I could not wait any longer. Even though I was exhausted, I took out some old wooden boards, a hammer, and a few nails to build a simple door for my daughter. The door was not beautiful, and our home was still poor, but at least that night Kim Truc had a warm meal to eat and a warmer place to sleep. After 3 years away serving at sea, a veteran finally returns home… only to find his life completely changed.
