Just when his study and self-realization were about to complete, he heard his mother Liu Qing-Ti had strayed from the study of Buddhism while she was alive, and has been sentenced to hell upon her death. Mu-Lian rushed to hell, and saw his mother being escorted to the Mountain of Sliding Oil. Jiang Wei paid the King of Qiang Tribe, Mi Dang, for assistance. Mi attacked Jiang with one hundred thousand soldiers. Alarmed, Sima Shi sent Chen Tai, an acquaintance of Mi, to persuade Mi to turn his coat. Chen Tai met Mi Dang and made up a story of how Jiang Wei despised and insulted Mi. Mi turned against Jiang Wei on the battlefield. Sima Shi and Guo Huai then attacked from the other side.
