The Raids: A Dawn Raids Documentary
This documentary was directed, filmed, and edited by me. What is the Dawn Raids? In the early 1970s, many people in New Zealand started seeing Polynesians and Migrants as an issue for their economy and overall well-being. During the 1970s (around 1973-1979), Police and Immigration officials enforced Immigration Laws around overstaying however, not everyone was targeted. Instead, Police and Immigration officials overwhelmingly conducted raids on the homes of Pacific families. People in those homes were woken abruptly, and physically removed from their beds and forced into police vans for questioning. Some were hauled into the police station to appear in court the next day, some were wrongfully detained. During the period that became known as the Dawn Raids, Police also conducted random stops and checks which required any person on request to produce their passport or permit if there was good cause to suspect an immigration-related offence such as overstaying a permit—alleged illegal overstayers from the Pacific Islands. Why is it important? Through my documentary, I wanted to show how the Dawn Raids were an important part of New Zealand’s history, Polynesian history, and most importantly my family’s history. It is important to show what my family endured to protect/provide for the opportunities and things I do today. It’s also important to show the Impacts of The Dawn Raids and how they still impact us. I’ve asked a bunch of students at Mount Albert Grammar School if they knew what the Dawn Raids were however the majority of the school's students had no idea about the Dawn Raids which leads me to believe even more people in New Zealand still aren’t educated about this important part of New Zealand’s history. I also wanted to dive a bit into how New Zealand government is still needs some change.
