Webinar - The Land Sector and Removals Standard

The GHG Protocol is a widely used GHG accounting standard. In 2023, 97% of the disclosing S&P 500 companies reported to CDP using the GHG Protocol standards. The protocol is managed jointly by the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and serves as an important guide for corporate climate reporting worldwide. The GHG Protocol is widely applied across the bioenergy sector, including companies involved in bioethanol, biodiesel, and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production, as well as forest industry groups, pellet producers, and other biomass value chain actors. Recently, the GHG Protocol launched its Global Standard for Corporate Accounting for Land Sector Emissions and Removals (LSR Standard). The new standard takes effect in January 2027. Initial assessments indicate that its proposed accounting approach may significantly alter how biomass-related emissions and removals are reported. Companies across the bioenergy value chain could face substantially higher reported emissions compared to existing regulatory and life-cycle assessment methodologies. Particularly for forest-based biomass, the delayed integration of forest carbon accounting requirements under the LSR Standard may introduce additional reporting complexities and potential inconsistencies with established scientific and policy frameworks.
