The Alekhine Defense, developed in 1921, challenged classical notions of opening play, transforming the concept of time and space on the chessboard. It was soon followed by the hypermodern Reti Opening, the Nimzowitsch Defense, the Grünfeld Defense, and others, which cemented the counterattacking concept of Black, and later White. The question of the correctness of 1.e4 Nf6!? was quickly resolved; White's hasty attempts to refute the new setup head-on were unsuccessful. More sophisticated methods were then employed, each of which Black dutifully found a worthy retort to... How should proponents of the King's Opening respond to a challenging first move?
