"How Insensitive" (original Portuguese title: "Insensatez") is a famous bossa nova and jazz standardcomposed by the legendary Brazilian musician Antônio Carlos Jobim Origins and History • The Music: Written by Jobim in 1963, the hauntingly beautiful melody is heavily inspired by Frédéric Chopin's Prelude No. 4 in E minor. • The Lyrics: The original Portuguese poetry was written by Vinícius de Moraes. The English adaptation, which gave the song its famous title "How Insensitive," was penned later by Norman Gimbel. • The Meaning: The song portrays the deep regret and heartbreak of someone who reacted coldly and silently when a partner confessed their love, realizing too late how cruel that silence was.
