A completely normal day at a photovoltaic system, troubleshooting an insulation fault that had forced a PV inverter to shut down the previous day. As I got closer and closer to the fault and finally found it, I had to put on my personal protective equipment to protect myself from opening a solar connector (MC4) while it was under load. Here, I demonstrate what happens when you open a solar connector without first checking that the connector is off-load. Opening the connection causes an arc fault, which destroys the plug and socket. Do not attempt this under any circumstances! There is a risk to life and limb from electric shock or burns!
