Viagem a Barril de Alva de Autocaravana

Barril de Alva is a Portuguese village in the municipality of Arganil that was the seat of the now-defunct parish of Barril de Alva, a parish with an area of 3.34 km² and 281 inhabitants (2011), and therefore a population density of 84.1 inhabitants/km². The parish of Barril de Alva was abolished in 2013 as part of a national administrative reform, and was merged with the parish of Coja to form a new parish called União das Freguesias de Côja e Barril de Alva, with its seat in Côja. Legend has it that there was a place on the right bank of the Alva River, between Vila Cova de Sub-Avô and Coja, with no known name. One day, Alva experienced a great flood. A miller from the small village, noticing barrels of various sizes in the stream, grabbed a pole and managed to drag them to the bank. That year, wine production was so high that the wine barrels ran out, and nearby farmers had to turn to the miller to buy the barrels they needed. It was after this incident that the miller became known as the "Miller of the Barrel." It is also said that the miller had three daughters; after marrying, they lived in three different places, later named Casal Cimeiro, Casal do Meio, and Casal Fundeiro, giving rise to the village of Barril de Alva. The 1527 Population Registry of the Kingdom, commissioned by King John III, stated that Barril belonged to the Côja region and had ten households. In the Parish Registry Office of Sub-Avô, in 1727, Father Luís Cardoso records twenty-nine residents. In 1894, the Barrilense Philharmonic Society was founded, which, after two years, had twenty-four members, a testament to the importance of the village in the region. On July 25, 1924, it gained administrative independence through the separation of Vila Cova Sub-Avô. In 1938, the Chapel of St. Simon was elevated to the status of Parish Church, reflecting the town's autonomy. In 2011, it had an area of 3.34 km² and a population of 281. It was dissolved in 2013 as part of a national administrative reform and was incorporated into the parish of Côja.
