As specialized Army forces, they work directly alongside the Bundeswehr's special forces. They train for emergency situations in regular exercises so that they can immediately deploy their diverse skills. EGB forces are the link between regular troops and the Bundeswehr's special forces. Their core mission is to provide tactical support to the special forces. Two paratrooper companies, an engineer platoon, and a reconnaissance platoon are deployed in each of the two regiments of the 1st Airborne Brigade for this mission. EGB forces typically carry out missions, for example, to rescue German citizens or their own isolated soldiers. These missions take place as part of military evacuation measures. But their mission encompasses much more. EGB forces are also deployed, among other things, to liberate key infrastructure such as train stations or radio stations, to capture important enemy commanders, to disrupt them behind enemy lines, and to disrupt lines of communication. EGB forces thus expand the scope of action of the military leadership. Their training and skills, positioned between the multitude of non-specialized army soldiers and the actual special forces, offer the responsible commander the opportunity to provide targeted and effective support to a special forces mission – for better and faster mission fulfillment.
