Waiting for the Yukon River to break in Dawson City, Yukon

Since the 1940's, the Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire (IODE) have organized the local ice pool, selling tickets, allowing everyone to pick the day and time they think the Yukon River ice will break-up. The official time of break-up is marked by a wooden tripod placed out on the Yukon River, tethered to a clock on the shore with a cable. When the river ice moves the tripod, the cable will trip the clock, marking the official time.
