This beetle, the Popillia japonica, or Japanese beetle, is devastating crops in Lombardy and Piedmont. It comes directly from Japan, belongs to the Scarabaeidae family, has no natural predators, and is currently considered a priority quarantine pest. Yes, because it is a type of beetle that infests and destroys several common plant species, such as grapevines, fruit trees like apricots, cherries, plums, and blueberries, as well as corn and soybeans. Popillia japonica, as it is known, is oval in shape, about 10 mm long and 6 mm wide. It is very easy to recognize both by its classic metallic green color, with bronze highlights, and by its white tufts: five on the sides of its abdomen and two slightly larger ones at the end.
