In South India, a devadasi was a woman who was dedicated to worship and serve a deity or a temple for the rest of her life. After becoming Devadasis, young women would spend their time learning religious rites, rituals, and dances. They sometimes had children with high officials or the priests who instructed them in music and dancing. In Tamil Devdasis were known as Devar Adigalar, ("Dev" means "Divine" and "Adigalar" "Servants", i.e. "Servants of the Divine"). Both male and female Devadasi were dedicated to the service of a temple and its deity. Amy Beatrice Carmichael (16 December 1867 – 18 January 1951) was a Protestant Christian missionary in India, who opened an orphanage and founded a mission in Dohnavur and also she was completely against of the system 'Devadhasi' she fought for the system and served for the young girls in India for 55 years.
