REVIVING FISHING IN PELLESTRINA: LESS BUREAUCRACY, MORE SUPPORT AND VALUE FOR LOCAL PRODUCTS Reviving fishing in Pellestrina requires a concrete strategy that combines the protection of traditions, economic sustainability, and innovation. The island has lived off the sea and fishing for centuries, but today the sector is suffering from rising costs, international competition, bureaucracy, a decline in young fishermen, and challenges related to the lagoon. To revive the sector, it is necessary, first and foremost, to defend small-scale lagoon fishing. An institutional battle is needed to recognize the unique nature of Venetian and Pellestrina fishing, which is distinct from large-scale industrial fishing. Derogations and regulations dedicated to traditional fishing, less bureaucratic pressure, and financial support for small vessels are needed. Another key point concerns reducing costs for fishermen. High fuel and maintenance costs are putting many businesses in difficulty. This requires regional and municipal contributions, favorable agreements for fuel and maintenance, and assistance for renovating boats with less polluting and more efficient engines. Local products must also be promoted. Lagoon fish must become a recognized quality brand, through the promotion of "Pesce di Pellestrina," agreements with local restaurants and markets, short supply chains, direct sales, and gastronomic and tourism events linked to the maritime tradition. Pellestrina could also become a true hub for fishing and maritime traditions, with a museum dedicated to fishing and the lagoon, workshops for nets and small-scale shipbuilding, experiential tourist tours with fishermen, and the involvement of schools. Generational turnover is also a key issue. Many young people no longer enter the sector. Vocational training, incentives for young fishermen, incentives for those starting fishing and aquaculture businesses, and concrete support for cooperatives are needed. Environmental and lagoon protection are essential. Without a healthy lagoon, there can be no fishing. We need to combat wave motion, ensure canal maintenance, control pollution, and find a balance between tourism, shipping, and the environment. Finally, we need greater political representation in the sector. Fishermen must regain a voice at city and regional decision-making tables. A stable dialogue between institutions and trade groups is necessary to prevent Pellestrina from being forgotten. Pellestrina remains one of the most authentic souls of the Venetian lagoon.
