The community that might hold the key to treating cancer | BBC News
A rare genetic condition that causes people to grow much shorter than average could help scientists understand how to prevent cancer and diabetes. About 840 people worldwide have Laron syndrome, a rare condition that prevents the body producing the growth hormone IGF-1 - and many of those live in a small region in Ecuador. Researchers studying this community have found that people with Laron syndrome appear to have much lower rates of cancer and diabetes, raising questions about whether their genetics could help develop future treatments. Scientists hope understanding the condition could unlock new ways to tackle age-related diseases.
