Morocco Aka Moroccan Fantasia Beware - Other Colour Pics Share This Title (1967)
Morocco. Several shots of snake charmer men; tootling pipes and taunting snakes before a crowd in the Square of the Dead, Djemma el Fna, in Marrakech. In Rabat we see guards outside the King's Palace; King Hassan and his young son appear before a crowd, accompanied by entourage. People and donkeys carry heavy loads of straw and grass near the city gates; storks stand by their nests on top of spires in the city. A storyteller sits cross-legged on a rug in the market place, surrounded by flowers and doves; he is served some mint tea. Tumblers and musicians perform before crowds beside the market. At the Thursday morning camel market we see several shots of men, camels and water sellers in traditional costume. Two camels appear to kiss. Some pretty western model girls pose by camels and ride on them while a western photographer snaps away with his camera. A western man walks past in traditional costume and fez. A mule is examined in the market. Various shots in a bazaar; a man carves a traditional Moroccan tribesman's rifle; a western man bargains for it, buys it from a stall holder and walks off through the streets with it over his shoulder. Several shots of brightly coloured dyed yarns hanging on poles over the streets to dry. As commentator tells us Morocco's most famous export is live horseflesh, we see some lovely horses and little foals gambolling about a green field. Several shots of horses being led around for exercise in Haras Marocains (the state-financed stud farm) near the city of Meknes. Various shots show Berber men celebrating an unnamed occasion by staging a 'Fantasia' - the Moroccan version of a mediaeval jousting tournament. Lots of charging about on horses and firing rifles into the air. People stand watching and huddle in tents around the display area.
