Around 88 percent of the UAE's population is foreign-born, and laborers from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and the Philippines kneel on asphalt that climbs past 60 degrees. A 2005 midday work ban stops outdoor labor between 12:30 and 3:00, but the dangerous heat no longer respects a two-and-a-half-hour window. Doctors across the Gulf are documenting chronic kidney disease in workers in their thirties, deaths logged as cardiac arrest when the real cause was a body that ran out of ways to cool itself.
