Michigan sees outbreak of cyclosporiasis, an infection caused by a parasite

State health officials are warning Michigan residents about an outbreak of cyclosporiasis, a rare parasitic infection that has sickened more than 300 people statewide, with many of the cases being reported out of the eastern half of the state. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services said the state normally sees about 50 cases of cyclosporiasis each year. The infection is more common in developing countries, but several states are dealing with outbreaks now, officials said. In Michigan, more than 170 cases have been reported in Monroe, Lenawee, Washtenaw, Wayne, Livingston, Shiawassee and Jackson counties, according to a news release. However, Erin Stover, an official with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, updated News Channel 3 to say that number has climbed to more than 300 as of Thursday evening.
