Upon receiving the remains of American soldiers killed in Jordan and Iraq, the US president outlined his vision for the future of the ongoing military escalation between Washington and Tehran: we will bomb more bridges and power stations in response to any Iranian missile hitting a ship transiting the Strait of Hormuz. At the same time, Trump expressed his preoccupation with the nuclear issue, threatening to strike what he described as a facility at Jabal al-Fas, suspected of being a rear base for Iran's nuclear arsenal. The Iranian response came from the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, who stated that no one would sell oil in a region where Iran does not sell its own. Ghalibaf added that no infrastructure in the region would be secure if Iran's security were not guaranteed. Thus, it is a tit-for-tat exchange. For the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, the picture is crystal clear: it's all or nothing. Despite this, the door to diplomacy has not been completely closed. Rubio has expressed his country's readiness, under certain conditions, to reach an agreement with Iran, while the Iranian president has praised Pakistani mediation efforts. This comes as international media outlets reveal details of a ten-day truce proposed by the mediators, the terms of which pave the way for negotiations aimed at reaching a long-term agreement on rules for shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Ideas that, if confirmed, would put the ball in both sides' court: either a de-escalation to pave the way for renewed negotiations, or a slide into further confrontation.
