Early in WWII, the Luftwaffe bombed the main manufacturing site of Spitfire airplanes, the lives of many technicians and craftsmen were lost, and the production of Spitfires ceased. It was decided that a secret location would be chosen, where the planes would be built in sheds, bus depots and garages, by unskilled young girls and retired men, supervised by a few engineers. This chosen town went on to produce hundreds of Spitfires responsible for the highest rate of kill during the war. The parts were assembled at a secret airfield where they were flown to RAF centres by 19 year old girls.
