Thoughts on Shomyo & Dusting off Ichikotsu - What it sounds like to change season with a hitoyogiri

It's interseason time — which means Spring music goes back in the drawer and Ichikotsu comes out to dust. In this entry I share what I've been exploring lately: shomyo, the Buddhist chanting that was part of the sonic world hitoyogiri players lived in. My teacher gave us a lesson on it and it genuinely changed something in how I hear the music. Two things stuck with me: the shomyo music sheet, which draws the shape of sound as a line rather than dots — suddenly yuri makes a lot more visual sense. And the sheer space given to a single syllable. Where pop music would cram in five sentences, shomyo gives half a page to one word. That taught me something about slowness, and about staying inside a note rather than already rushing toward the next one. I also play Ryo — a little rusty, a little shaky, but I'm happy to share with you what it sounds like, when you keep changing répertoire along the year - I love it! 🌸 More about the hitoyogiri: https://www.hitoyogiri.com/ 📚 Lessons and resources: https://www.hon-on.com/lessons.html L’école propose des cours en français — si cela vous intéresse, n'hésitez pas à me le dire!
