Geoje Island is a stronghold of sea fishing in the eastern part of the South Sea. It boasts a wide selection of fishing spots, including renowned reel-and-line fishing spots throughout the country. Yeocha-gwon, located at the southernmost tip of Geoje, is a prime fishing spot. In Yeocha-gwon, reel-and-line fishing is popular year-round on the rocks of the main island and its affiliated islands. Black sea bream dominates the catch from late fall to early spring, while black sea bream continues its impressive run in the summer. The red sea bream season opens in early spring and continues into early winter. As late fall approaches, black sea bream and red sea bream compete fiercely for dominance. Black sea bream dominates the fishing spots on the main island of Geoje, while red sea bream tend to bite more actively at points on affiliated islands, such as Min Island. Minseom, which I visited with Samwoo Big Catch field tester Park Ho-beom on the day of my interview, is the most popular black porgy and red sea bream spot in the Yeocha area in late fall. Being directly influenced by the tidal currents that flow between Geoje Island's main island and Minseom, the area enjoys smooth tidal flow and well-developed underwater terrain, making it an excellent spot for black porgy and red sea bream. Targeting the tributary streams around the reefs is the most effective way to catch black porgy on Minseom in late fall. When targeting red sea bream on Minseom's reefs in late fall, focusing on the landscaped area where the tributary streams meet the main stream increases your chances of finding a catch. A fishing boat from Yeocha Wharf takes just five minutes to Minseom. Because of its close proximity, fishing boats frequently depart from Yeocha Wharf to Minseom and other islands within Geoje Island's Yeocha area. The first boat departs between 4 and 5 a.m., and the round-trip fare is 20,000 won per person.
