Riding a Henschel over the Katwijk-Leiden steam railway

English text below. Verslag van een ritje op loc 8 van de Stoomtrein Katwijk-Leiden. Op 15 mei 2026 mocht ik op uitnodiging van de bemanning van de Henschel meerijden op de loc. Het was een beetje krap met drie man in de cabine, maar het lukte prima. Interessant om te zien hoe de weerstand van zware trein extra stoom vraagt in de scherpe bogen en op de hellingen naar de brug in het traject. De SKL mag momenteel nog niet doorrijden naar de voormalige halte Wetlands, als gevolg van de grote instorting van de oever van het meer even verderop, maar daar komt op korte termijn verandering in. On May 15, 2026, I was invited on the engine for a ride over the railway. Space was a little tight in the cab, with three people, but we managed all right. The effect of train resistance on the curves and the gradient towards the bridge could be observed first hand - the need for extra steam made itself felt (and heard). The railway had to be truncated due to subsidence of the lake shore a year ago, but plans are afoot to extend the operation again to the former halt of Wetlands, about half a mile away from the present temporary terminus. And even now, the ride is quite worthwile, most of it through lush scenery along the lake shore. Thanks, Peter & Joris!
