Most Businesses Don’t Know Their Numbers, Here’s How to Fix It with Blue Dragonfly's Angela & Rupert

In this episode, we sit down with Angela Turtton and Robert Turtton from Blue Dragonfly Group to explore why understanding your numbers is one of the most important parts of building a stronger, calmer and more profitable business. Many business owners are excellent at what they do, but they do not always have a clear grip on the numbers that drive their decisions. Angela explains why this can hold a business back, especially when financial information is left until the end or handed over entirely to a bookkeeper or compliance accountant without the owner fully understanding what the figures mean. Angela is an accountant and co founder of Blue Dragonfly Group, helping businesses set up the systems they need to track, understand and use their financial numbers properly. Her work is especially valuable for companies with complex accounting systems, high transaction volumes or financial processes that have become difficult to manage. Her aim is to bring structure, order and calm so business owners can make decisions with more confidence. Robert brings a different but complementary skill set, delivering change management projects that help businesses move forward while owners remain focused on their core work. His ideal clients are often technology or engineering businesses with turnover above £1 million and teams of around 10 people, where the business is ready for its next stage of growth but needs support overcoming operational challenges. Together, Angela and Robert discuss the importance of helping clients become independent and interdependent rather than permanently reliant on outside support. Their goal is not simply to take over. It is to help business owners understand what is happening, create the right systems and build the confidence to manage the business more effectively. The conversation also explores the three core areas of Blue Dragonfly Group’s work: consultancy, fractional support and facilitation. From improving finance systems and profitability planning to chairing better meetings and supporting change projects, their work is designed to help businesses become more organised, communicative and commercially aware. A key part of the episode focuses on meetings, communication and decision making. Robert explains why a good meeting needs a clear agenda, advance preparation, time control and space for everyone to have a voice. He also discusses why pre meetings can sometimes weaken the quality of discussion and decision making. Angela shares more about her own working style, describing herself as structured and task focused, while still believing that business should be personable and enjoyable. Robert reflects on how many successful businesses are built around the relationship between someone with strong ideas and someone who can turn those ideas into action. Both types of people need each other, and understanding that dynamic can make a huge difference inside a growing company. Towards the end of the episode, Angela and Robert share how Blue Dragonfly Business Services works with clients, starting with a conversation to understand the business, followed by a scoping meeting to work out what needs to change. They also discuss the reality of working together as a married couple, including the importance of clear roles, mutual respect, regular business meetings and boundaries between work and home life.
