Two Days After the Birmingham Bombings: Aston Villa v Portsmouth (1974)
On 23rd November 1974, Portsmouth travelled to Villa Park to face Aston Villa in a Second Division fixture unlike any other. Just two days earlier, Birmingham had been devastated by the IRA pub bombings. Twenty-one people lost their lives and more than 180 were injured in one of the darkest days in the city's history. As the city mourned, football continued. Aston Villa and Portsmouth took to the field wearing black armbands as a mark of respect for the victims and their families. The atmosphere inside Villa Park was understandably subdued, with the tragedy casting a shadow over the afternoon's events. In this video, we revisit the match highlights from that emotional day, placing them in their historical context and remembering the people whose lives were so tragically affected. This is more than just a football match from the archives—it's a snapshot of a city in mourning and a reminder of how football can unite communities during times of grief. 📌 If you enjoy Portsmouth FC history, historic match footage, and stories from Pompey's past, please like, comment, and subscribe to The Portsmouth History Channel. #PortsmouthFC #Pompey #AstonVilla #FootballHistory #VillaPark #1974 #BirminghamBombings #SecondDivision #PompeyHistory
