Saint Louis, Senegal: Discovering the vibrant UNESCO Heritage colonial capital of French West Africa

Welcome to colorful Saint Louis, Senegal, the vibrant UNESCO World Heritage listed historic colonial capital of French West Africa. Located on the Atlantic Ocean coastline in Senegal's far north near the Mauritania border, this fascinating city blends French colonial architecture and history with the vibrant sights, sounds, and colours of Senegalese culture. If you're looking for a laid-back alternative to the chaos of the capital of Dakar, Saint-Louis makes a perfect side trip from the capital (roughly four hours drive on sealed roads) and is well worth discovering! I begin my tour around Saint-Louis by crossing the Senegal River over the Faidherbe Bridge, (desgined by Gustav Eiffel of Eiffel Tower fame!) to the barrier island where the historic 'old town' is located. Once the very heart of French West Africa, the strees of Saint-Louis are lined with colourful colonial buildings featuring wrought-iron balconies, stunning windows, and a palette of vibrant colours. Be warned that Saint-Louis is HOT, so take some time to cool down at the excellent Coconut Cafe, Farmers Coffee, or any of the other charming bars around the historic center, many featuring old-world and mid-century modern architecture. After touring the historic center of Saint-Louis, I return to the New Town area where I give you a full tour of my $22 AirBNB before catching a sept-place (seven seater) to the capital city of Dakar.
