Ebonised Beech and Sapele Urn Part 2: Ebonising with Vinegar and Steel Wool
In this video I begin the process of ebonising the Beech wood parts of this urn. Since I'm using an Iron Acetate solution I need to add a concentrate of tannin to the wood as it doesn't contain a large amount naturally. I prepared my own tannin concentrate specially for this project. Most people would use tea but I used something different to produce a higher concentration. It worked perfectly!! I start by saturating the wood with the tannin and leaving it to soak in and dry. Once dry I saturate the wood with the Iron Acetate solution that I prepared a week earlier. The ebonising reaction begins almost immediately. After a few hours the reaction is complete and the piece is dry. The grain raised slightly so I added another coat and left to dry again before finishing. I followed the same procedure for the lid after reshaping slightly as the piece had cracked while drying. Finally I bored a mortise for the finial I have planned to cap this piece. In Part 3 I'll smelt some pewter into a blank and use pot to turn a finial that will compliment the ebonies wood.
