Should You Remove Tomato Flowers? Pruning Young Tomato Plants 🍅 Tomatoes: Seed to Harvest Pt. 12

In part 12 of my Tomatoes: Seed to Harvest series, I’m pruning young tomato plants and talking about when I remove early flower clusters, lower branches, and suckers. Some tomato plants will start flowering when they’re still very small. Whether I remove those flowers depends on the type of tomato and the condition of the plant. For cherry tomatoes and dwarf tomatoes, I often leave early flowers if the plant is healthy. But for larger slicing tomatoes, I usually remove early flower clusters so the plant can focus on establishing roots and strong growth before carrying large fruit. I also show the difference between a tomato branch and a sucker, explain how I prune indeterminate, determinate, and semi-determinate tomatoes differently, and remove lower branches to help reduce soil splash and disease pressure. After pruning, I shift into tomato garden chores and start removing bindweed with a stirrup hoe and a small Japanese scuffle hoe. Bindweed was a major problem in my garden last season, so this year I’m staying on top of it early before it starts climbing my tomatoes.
