From Training to Practice: Securing Your First EM Pharmacist Role
Students, residents, and early career pharmacists pursuing emergency medicine pharmacy frequently report uncertainty and variability in preparedness for transitioning into their first EM pharmacist role. While formal training programs emphasize clinical knowledge and patient care, there is limited structured education focused on career entry, role expectations, and early professional development specific to EM pharmacy. As a result, many learners rely on informal mentorship or trial-and-error to navigate employer expectations, evaluate practice environments, and manage early career challenges. This educational activity was selected to address identified knowledge and practice gaps related to understanding EM pharmacist roles, securing a first position, and successfully transitioning into independent practice. It will provide experience-based guidance from practicing EM pharmacists and leaders to clarify expectations for entry level roles, highlight strategies for pursuing and selecting positions that align with individual goals, and discuss approaches to early career development and sustainability. By addressing these gaps, the webinar aims to improve learner confidence, promote better job fit, and support a more prepared and resilient EM pharmacy workforce. Learning Objectives At the completion of this activity, the pharmacist will be able to: -Identify key attributes and expectations sought by employers for first EM pharmacist roles. -Describe strategies to pursue and secure a first EM pharmacist position that aligns with personal and professional goals. -Evaluate different EM practice environments and role types to inform early career decisions. -Recognize approaches to navigate early career challenges and build foundational skills for professional growth.
