This is a Shiva Shakti religious temple in which Nandikeshvara is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Chamunda is dedicated to Sri Chamunda Devi, a form of Goddess Durga. The temple's sanctum sanctorum houses the sacred idol of Maa Chamunda Devi, which is highly historical and mythological. The idol of Chamunda is wrapped in many colours, but red and black are particularly used. Chamunda is derived from two words Chand and Mund. According to mythology, Goddess Kali killed two notorious demons named Chand and Mund in a fierce battle at this place in ancient times. Chand and Mund were very powerful and had received the boon of immortality from Lord Brahma, vowing that no one would be able to kill them. The sins committed by Chand and Mund continued to increase. Frustrated by this, all the gods convened a council and, using their powers, created a corpse called Ambika and instructed her to destroy Chand and Mund. The goddess then destroyed Chand and Mund. Therefore, the goddess is known and worshipped as Chamunda. This is described in the 27th verse of the 7th chapter of the Durga Saptashati, part of the Markandeya Purana. The Chamunda Devi Temple in Dharamshala is no ordinary temple. It is one of the hill station's major tourist attractions. This temple is steeped in history. It is ancient, dating back to the 16th century, and is associated with many spiritual legends.
