Jubilee Singers sing Spirituals!

Here are twelve spirituals performed by the Jubilee Singers under the direction of Mrs. James A Myers. The quartet includes Harold Johnson and Elmer Dickey, tenors; George Goodman, baritone; and Herbert Gibson, bass. Dr. Raymond Jackson is the pianist. Henrietta Crawley, aka Mrs James A. Myers, (1878-1968) was a contralto and former student at Fisk University where she sang with the Jubilee Singers under the direction of John Wesley Work II, the first African American collector of folk songs and spirituals. She married the Rev. James A. Myers in 1906 and assisted him in his duties as director of the Singers until his death in 1928 where she took over the leadership of the ensemble until her retirement from Fisk University in 1947.
