In this video, I demonstrate how to repair the shifter on a roughly 20-year-old Shimano Deore LX derailleur. The delicate mechanical components are greased, and over the years, this lubrication hardens. In this particular case, the very small detents can no longer engage, and the shifting mechanism fails. Initially, it worked after several attempts—but eventually, it became so frustrating that I decided to remove the three or four screws holding the housing in place. Luckily, no springs popped out. I used a solvent to dissolve the hardened grease and re-lubricated it. I'm demonstrating this on the left shifter, for the front derailleur—the process for the right shifter should be very similar.
